Vide a recent notification (NMC/US(NMC)/Misc/2022-96) dated 8 Feb 2022, CAUTIONING the Indian students at large, the apex body National Medial Commission has published certain facts about admission in MBBS programmes in China for the current and forthcoming years. Ignoring these facts, stated below, may have pretty serious consequences for students.

1. Travel restrictions, Study discontinuity: China Govt has imposed strict travel restrictions in the wake of Covid-19 and suspended all visas since Nov 2020. A large number of students have not been able to return to China due to these restrictions, which, thus far, have not been relaxed.

2. Online courses, Not Recognized: The Chinese authorities have conveyed earlier that courses will be conducted online. And as per the current rules, National Medical Commission does not recognize or approve medical courses done only in online mode.

3. FMGE To Be Cleared: As per FMGE Regulations, students who pursue MBBS in China, are subject to clear FMGE in order to be able to practice as a doctor in India.

Quoting the above facts in its notification, NMC has advised the students to exercise due diligence while deciding where to pursue their medical education.

About FMGE and Poor Pass Percentage: The FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) screening test is mandatory for an Indian citizen/Overseas citizen of India possessing a primary medical qualification awarded by any medical institution outside India who is desirous of getting provisional or permanent registration with Medical Council of India or any State Medical Council. However, note that a candidate seeking provisional or permanent registration shall NOT have to qualify the Screening Test if he/she holds an Under Graduate and Post Graduate medical qualification from Australia / Canada / New Zealand / United Kingdom / United States of America.

Dismal Show By MBBS Degree Holders From China : As per the Govt records, in the period 2015-2018, only 2,370 (11.67%) students holding medical degrees from China were able to pass FMGE from a total 2031,4 candidates who appeared.

We had highlighted these poor FMGE performance issues as far back as in 2018 in one of our blogs. Read our blog “Planning for MBBS abroad? Know these first” for a complete perspective.
